It’s Going to Get Better… Because God is Working!

This overlooked scripture can help change everything when you are at your lowest point…

Have you ever noticed how God reveals exactly what you need at precisely the moment you need it most?

Yesterday morning, as I sat with my Bible open but my heart feeling heavy, something extraordinary happened. A passage I’ve read dozens of times suddenly appeared completely different – as if God Himself was highlighting words that had always been there but I’d never truly seen.

What I discovered was a spiritual weapon against depression that’s been hiding in plain sight all along.

If you’ve ever wrestled with depression while wondering why your faith hasn’t “fixed” it yet, today’s message might be the revelation you’ve been waiting for.

The Problem No One Wants To Discuss

Depression among believers is far more common than we acknowledge. We smile at church, quote verses about joy, and secretly wonder why we still feel empty inside.

It can feel like a spiritual failure. Like you don’t have enough faith. Like everyone else has figured out how to “rejoice always” while you’re still struggling to get out of bed.

And the solutions we typically hear?

  • ⏳”Just pray more”
  • 💔”Count your blessings”
  • 🌀”Trust God and it will go away”

These well-meaning suggestions often leave us feeling worse when they don’t instantly transform our emotions.

What if I told you there’s a powerful weapon against depression right in Scripture that most Christians completely overlook?

It’s not another “think positive” technique. It’s not about forcing happiness. And it’s definitely not about denying your feelings.

The Overlooked Weapon Revealed

In Psalm 42:5, David writes something profound: “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”

Notice what David doesn’t do here. He doesn’t:

  • 🌈 Deny his depression (“Why are you cast down, O my soul”)
  • 💥Shame himself for feeling depressed
  • 💥Immediately jump to forced happiness

Instead, he does something revolutionary – he talks to his own soul. He acknowledges the reality of his feelings while simultaneously directing his soul toward truth.

The weapon? Holy self-talk – the practice of speaking truth to yourself rather than just listening to yourself.

🙌🏽Think about it: When we’re depressed, we listen to our thoughts all day long. They tell us things are hopeless. They remind us of our failures. They predict more pain in our future.

💬But David shows us we can interrupt this cycle by speaking to our souls instead of just listening to them.

How This Weapon Works

This isn’t positive thinking or empty affirmations. This is the biblical practice of preaching truth to yourself when your emotions are preaching lies.

Imagine if you could:

  • ➡️Acknowledge your feelings without being controlled by them
  • ➡️Speak God’s truth to yourself with authority
  • ➡️Direct your soul toward hope rather than just reflecting its current state

The scriptures are filled with examples of this practice:

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits…” (Psalm 103:2)

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…” (Luke 1:46-47)

This isn’t about denying reality – it’s about reminding your soul of a higher reality when your emotions can only see darkness.

Your Invitation to Breakthrough

Yesterday’s revelation changed something in me. It showed me that God doesn’t expect us to deny our feelings – He gives us a way to acknowledge them while still directing our souls toward truth.

If you’ve been battling depression, I want to invite you to try something different. Instead of just experiencing your thoughts passively, begin the practice of holy self-talk.

Here’s a simple way to start:

  1. Acknowledge honestly how you feel (like David did)
  2. Choose a truth from Scripture that speaks to your situation
  3. Speak directly to your soul, directing it toward that truth

Try this practice for just 5 minutes each morning this week. Record how you talk to yourself in your online journal shown at the link below;

BEGIN YOUR BREAKTHROUGH TODAY

The enemy wants you to believe your depression disqualifies you from spiritual victory. But what if it’s actually the battlefield where God wants to show His power?

What if, like David, you can acknowledge your soul is cast down while simultaneously directing it toward hope?

P.S. Remember that this practice isn’t about instant results – it’s about faithful persistence. David had to remind himself repeatedly to hope in God. Don’t be discouraged if you need to speak truth to your soul many times. That’s not failure; it’s spiritual warfare in action.

You’ve read the words. You’ve felt them stir something deep. Now it’s time to invite the One who wrote the promises into the center of your process.

Let’s pray — not just with hope, but with expectation that God is ready to move in your life. 🌟⬇️

Now it’s time to invite the One who wrote the promises into the center of your process.

You’ve read the words. You’ve felt them stir something deep within you. Now it’s time to invite the Author of every promise into the center of your journey. Let’s pray—not only with hope, but with the expectation that God is ready to move in your life.

Father God,

Here I am.

My thoughts have been heavy.
My heart has grown tired.
And sometimes, Lord, my own words have worked against me.

But now, I’m beginning to see. I’m learning that the words I speak over myself hold the power to change the atmosphere. That when I speak Your truth instead of my fear, everything begins to shift.

So Lord, I welcome You in.

I lay down the negative self-talk.
The mental loops.
The “what ifs” and the “never will I’s.”
I place them all at Your feet.

In place of doubt, help me declare:

I am fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14)
No weapon formed against me shall prosper. (Isaiah 54:17)
God is working all things together for my good. (Romans 8:28)
I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. (Psalm 27:13)
I am not alone—God is with me. (Joshua 1:9)

When discouragement whispers,
Help me speak life with greater strength.

When depression creeps in,
Remind my soul of the One who holds the light.

When I feel exhausted and ready to give up,
Let me boldly proclaim: God is not finished with me yet.

I don’t always have the strength to say the right things, Lord.
But You do.

So speak through me. Live through me.
Train my mouth to echo the language of Heaven, not the defeat of this world.

And when I forget, Father,
Gently remind me to surrender once again.
To release my grip.
To trust that You are at work in me, through me, and around me—even when I cannot see it.

I’m not just trying to feel better.
I’m seeking to become who You created me to be.

So shape me.
Speak to me.
And teach me to speak life—with boldness, truth, and grace.

In the name of Jesus—
The Word made flesh,
The Healer of hearts,
And the Lifter of heads—
Amen.

Pray this as often as you need.
Speak the promises out loud—there is power in your voice.
Keep God’s Word close—closer than your doubts.

God is moving—and so are you.
Together, you are unstoppable.
